San Mateo Jockey Club closing until March 31st

San Mateo, CA – San Mateo County Event Center suspends operation at its Jockey Club Satellite Wagering Facility until March 31.

The San Mateo County Event Center is continuing to monitor evolving decisions surrounding Coronavirus (COVID19). Informed decision making is critical during these historic and unprecedented crises within our County.

On March 5, 2020, County Manager Mike Callagy declared a State of emergency for San Mateo County and San Mateo County Health Officer,  Scott Morrow recommended that “all non-essential gatherings be canceled, postponed, or done remotely.”

Updated information from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommends organizers should consider canceling non-essential events primarily for events attended by older adults and people with chronic medical conditions who are at higher risk for severe illness

With this awareness from local and state agencies, the San Mateo County Event Center is moving forward with suspending operations at our satellite wagering facility, the Jockey Club, until March 31. “This decision is unfortunate but necessary.  It further protects our patrons, staff, and community,” said Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo County Event Center. “Health and wellness best practices should always be comprehensively integrated when managing public venues; especially knowing that many of our Jockey Club patrons and staff members are older and may have chronic medical conditions, there was no other choice but to do the right thing. We will reassess the situation regularly, and our goal is to return to normal business operations as soon as we can safely do so and meet recommendations provided by health officials.”

Moving forward, we remain focused on health and safety as a practice. We continue to encourage everyone to behave responsibly with protective actions such as those below:

  • Washing hands with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay away from work, school, or other people if you become sick with respiratory symptoms like fever and cough.
  • Following guidance from public health officials.
